A Community to Drive Visitors to Great Content With Few Readers

by James M. Helms on October 30, 2008

There are millions of blogs on the internet and many receive relatively low amounts of traffic. Likewise there are many readers searching for new sources of information but don’t know how to find the less known blogs. As a result both bloggers and readers are being under-served. Finding new blogs takes time, time that many people do not have. Chuck Westbrook has set out to solve this situation with a collaborative approach to increasing site traffic and meeting readers needs.

In his post titled “How You Can Help End the Problem of Blogs With Great Content and No Readers” Chuck tackled the issue head on. By working together as community of readers people can support each other by visiting each others blogs. Chuck writes that participants should “be willing to add only one new blog’s worth of reading to your life. This will be a different blog every two weeks”. The benefits of increasing readership among a different blog are many. He writes:

With scores of bloggers focused on a particular blog, the author should see many nice things happen over those two weeks, especially if the blog really is a hidden gem. This includes discussions, traffic, constructive criticism, encouragement, and connecting to some of the bloggers in the group. That author then joins the group and we move along and do it again.

That sounds good to me! I love participating in communities and engaging with people on a variety of topics.

Networking With People is a Great Way to Gain Readership and Foster a Community

I say that from a theoretical standpoint of course…I haven’t reached the pinnacle of success, this blog is still growing. I know that you are in the same boat as I am…yes even you Seth Godin, you still haven’t delivered your greatest book or created the best closed community…(at least I don’t think so…what’s going on in the Triibe anyway?)…Regardless, if driving traffic and building a community sounds like something that you want to do, the most powerful tool is to get out there and network online and for really reals.

Here’s where we are with Today’s Best Tools: I’ve met a lot of great people since July 9th, the day I began writing here at Today’s Best Tools. I’ve marketed the site in a variety of ways (ethical ways of course). Of all of the ways that I have implemented to drive traffic to this site, networking is by far the best way. I encourage you to become a part of this effort whether you have a blog or just like reading them. Your input is really valuable, your insights are unique. There is a large and growing community that wants to network with you too, just follow the link above to be a part of it.
