Auto Scrolling RSS Feeds Enabled With Snackr

by James M. Helms on July 23, 2008

If you like using RSS then you should try out Snackr, a scrolling RSS reader created by Narciso Jaramillo. I first read about Snackr through a post written by Marshall Kirkpatrick, the lead blogger at Readwrite web. When I first read about Snackr I was busy with other projects and I didn’t get the chance to try it out, I didn’t realize how easy it was to install and setup. Regardless, I finally found some time a couple of weeks ago, and I am glad that I did. In the last two weeks I have grown strongly attached to Snackr’s simple to use interface and the value that it brings to finding great data.

When I first installed the Adobe Air application I was slightly distracted, it’s much like a ticker symbol and it draws your eye away from the work that you are supposed to be doing. Luckily I found out that I could hide the thin strip of information if I really needed to concentrate on what I was doing. One simple click and Snackr slides gracefully below my computer screen. You can adjust where Snackr displays, it can display any side of your screen. I found that I could adjust the speed of the data strip too, the strip gets really distracting when it moves fast.

Snackr accepts individual RSS feeds but it also accepts OPML files, you can load the desired feeds quickly and easily. I use and manipulate a lot of feeds on a daily basis. I use a lot of different aggregator’s, some of which I have already talked about on this blog. The times that I use the Snackr reader the most are when I am waiting for something to load or download. Having the reader available as an additional option to access feeds is nice, if you get a chance to try it, you should.

If I could change anything about Snackr I would increase the frequency that it updates new content. Likewise I would allow the user to specify the display time of newest posts down to 30 minute increments. Gaining access to immediate data would be great, for now I will settle for this application just the way it is.
