Check Your User Name Across Multiple Sites at Once

by James M. Helms on November 20, 2008

Have you taken a couple minutes to check out Usernamecheck.com? It’s a simple interface that allows you to check the availability of user names across many platforms with one query. So, why is this a useful tool? I’ve identified three main ways that you can use this online tool as outlined below. If you can think of some additional uses please leave them in the comments below.

User Name Check as a Resource to Learn About Online Platforms

I spend a lot of time checking out new sites and tools, it’s a hobby that I rather enjoy. I found usernamecheck.com through a mention in Twitter and was surprised when I found a few sites that I had never heard of before. User name check is a great way to get introduced to sites, platforms, and networks around the web.

User Name Check as a Tool to Ensure Consistent Personal Branding

This has never been high on my to-do list but many people are really dedicated to personal branding on the web. If you use your name for your user name…i.e. jameshelms you can literally dominate the search engine results when people search for your name.

Many of the platforms have a lot of strength in the search engines and quickly pass up smaller sites that are less established. If you want your personal name to dominate the search results you should consider maintaining brand consistency across a variety of platforms.

User Name Check as a Tool For Competitor Tracking

Why limit checking for your own name when you can check for the known user names of competitors. Personal branding is something that people pay a lot of attention to. If your competitors maintain the same user name across different platforms you can monitor what they are up to. Competitive tracking is a useful way to stay updated to what your competitors are saying.

I don’t use the same user name across all platforms all the time, I don’t know why. But if you do this is a great tool to use to maintain your personal branding. Plus it helps your competitors stay up to date with your online activities.

What do you think of this tool? What additional uses can you come up with? Leave your comments below.
