Hands Free Data On the Go With Jott

by James M. Helms on July 11, 2008

As technology advances one of the major trends we have all seen is portability. This is evidenced by increasingly smaller devices that have increasing amounts of functionality. There are challenges to overcome when it comes to portability, smaller devices can be harder to use because of size. Voice recognition is an innovation that is getting better every day, Jott is an online service that leverages it and can make your life easier.

Jott is a simple service that allows users to send and receive textual content hands free from mobile devices. Voice recognition has many uses and combined with other technology users can send and receive more information faster. The service has been around for awhile but the expanded features make it a hard service not to talk about.

After signing up for the free account at www.jott.com you can set preferences and link to a variety of services. Take for instance the ability to link to Google calendar. I have placed many events on my calendar while on the go using Jott. The voice recognition is able to pick up on acronyms, addresses, times (a.m. or p.m.), days of the week or simple short phrases like “next Tuesday”. The ability to add events to a calendar hands free has been really valuable.

There are a variety of other ways you can use Jott. I’ve used Jott for writing short blogs, updating my status on twitter, creating lists of things to do, sending emails to friends or reminders to myself. The voice recognition has been surprisingly accurate most of the time. If a message doesn’t transcribe well the reader can follow a link and listen to a voice recording of the message.

Voice recognition isn’t always perfect with Jott. I’ve seen some odd messages in my Twitter feed, and struggled through some questionable word combination’s in personal reminders. Then again I have also been surprised at Jott’s ability to pick up words like Taekwondo. Many times the mis-communication is due to my personal mumbling “issue” or background noise.

The other feature that I found really helpful is the ability to add and recieve RSS syndicated voice transcribed feeds while on my mobile. After setting up your feeds you can listen to headlines and many combinations of RSS feeds. You can listen to specific news headlines and descriptions, your friends status updates on Facebook, and more. If you are commuting and want to listen in on your favorite syndicated article headlines and descriptions you can do it with Jott.
