Search and Filter Articles and RSS With Filtrbox

by James M. Helms on July 10, 2008

The one thing the Internet allows people to do really well is supply information. Sifting through articles and RSS feeds to find the most relevant information can be really time consuming. There are a few solid web based  tools that simplify the process of filtering data. I am sure that there will be many mentions in the days, weeks, and (hopefully) years ahead.

One of the tools that just came out of beta is filtrbox, an online aggregator with filtering capabilities. The online web based tool searches the web for relevant content and allows you to filter the information by pre-set keywords that you specify.

The interface was easy to learn and simple to understand. Here are some things that I like about filtrbox:

  • The ablity to add custom RSS feeds to ensure that the content you find most valuable is filtered.
  • Visual graphing interface to monitor buzz trends over time.
  • Easy filtering of Summize and Friendfeed if you feel it is relevant.
  • Multiple levels of subscriptions (such as 5 free filters) both free and paid.
  • The option to receive (or not) daily emails containing new articles.
  • The ability to filter based on the rank of a page.
  • Sorting of articles by rank, title, date and filter.

As a “details” kind of person I would like to see a list of all of the sites that they search. If they were already searching a site that I wanted to include I wouldn’t need to add my RSS feed. The time necessary to set up a list may be cost prohibitive, or they may just figure guys like me are few and far between.

Altogether it is a great service, it adds a lot of value and saves a lot of time. The service isn’t as complex as Yahoo Pipes, and more involved than Google alerts (kinda the same things I guess). It is a great filtering tool and I hope you find useful. In what ways can (or will) you benefit from a tool like filtrbox?
