Alerts.com is a free service that enables you to set up alert parameters and get instant (or delayed) notification according to your specifications. You have the ability to specify how you are alerted to include SMS, email, cell phone, home phone, or work phone. You can choose the alert delivery that best meets your needs for each alert that you set up.
The service has preset categories and the ability to add RSS feeds as well. Some of the preset categories are things like wake up calls, traffic alerts, local gas prices, and baseball scores. There are other alerts that notify you about weather, flight searches, and hotel prices. You can even receive alerts about new job listings, amber alert updates and birthday reminders. My favorite option is the ability to set up RSS feed alerts by keyword/phrases. See an example of the Gas alerts email that you receive below:
This is a new platform, as of this writing it has only been available to the public for around a month. There are are some new applications coming. According to the website there will be price watch and price protection alerts added soon. The platform is closed to developers to work with but it sounds like it won’t be for long.
According to the Alerts.com site they will be opening up the API for developers to create unique reminders and share in the revenue. The combination of flexible alerts, upcoming open API, and free service to end users makes this web based tool really promising. If you are looking for a service that gives you flexible alert options this is a great place to start.
I’ve tried out the service for a few day now and like the easy to use interface and funtionality. They have an advertising revenue model which can deter some people. If you are able to put up with advertisements then this may be for you. I am really digging this site and I am excited about what they have coming up.
