Two Web Based Sites for News Mashups

by James M. Helms on August 15, 2008

Before you came across this post you were one of those people who squandered your day searching various news sites for breaking news. News is a constant stream of data, it never stops. The process of gathering relevant news is quite inefficient and often times biased. If you’re like me you have many things to do on top of staying informed. Any web based tool that assists you with your information management is really appreciated. If this is true here are two web based tools that you can use to increase your efficiency and stay informed about what matters most to you.

World and industry level news at a macro level can be simplified with newsflashr (currently in beta). Simply query the search engine and receive various feeds from around the internet all on the same page. You can dig into the site and find tag clouds for popular headlines, leader boards, stock market data, and more. You can easily toggle the time frame of the news to get relevant information from the last hour or seven hours.

On a local level you can find even more information using local signal, a site created by Portland based Ryan Williams. Local signal delivers local news to over 4 dozen locations around the United States. Through a horizontal navigation bar you can easily scan the headlines of news, sports, events, local blogs, and much more. The data is combined from several news and information sources allowing you to receive the most relevant data concerning local news and commentary.

Like I said before, you used to squander your day searching numerous sites around the internet for breaking news. Using these two sites you just increased your ability to find relevant content fast. You didn’t even have to manipulate numerous data feeds in your personal aggregator. If you appreciate the value that these two sites offer make sure to bookmark them for use in the future.
